What Is Protein Spiking?

Protein spiking, also known as amino spiking or nitrogen spiking, is one of the nutrition industry’s most misleading practices. It happens when companies state values of protein on label that are much higher than the amount naturally present in the main protein ingredients (like soy, casein or whey concentrates).

How can they get away with this?

The simplest way to check protein content is by measuring nitrogen levels. So, companies are secretly adding cheap, nitrogen-rich compounds/fillers like L-glycine or L-taurine to protein powders (to save money as protein ingredients are costly). These fillers trick lab tests into showing inflated protein numbers, even though they’re not providing any benefits and/or are incomplete proteins.

 

Example: A label might claim 25g of protein per scoop, but in reality, you could be getting only 15g of protein from the main (beneficial) protein ingredients. This is not only dishonest, but it undermines your nutrition goals.
